The political party A20, which is collaborating with DOE in preparation for the 2025 elections, is not interested in merely being part of a government for the sake of forming a coalition. The party has ideals and positions itself based on the overall vision that the cabinet should have, according to party chairman Steven Reyme in light of recent political developments.
“If the entirety of a coalition is not in the interest of society, the party will step aside,” Reyme told LIM FM. He added that, in addition to working with DOE, the door is not closed to any other party. Currently, talks are underway with Leefbaar Suriname.
A20 stated that while productive discussions were held with the BEP party, no formal collaboration was established. However, the possibility of cooperation after the elections remains open. Reyme emphasized that important norms and values are being upheld.
An agreement has been made with DOE for the parties to operate under the A20 banner. Regarding the issue of filling the ministerial position at the Ministry of Home Affairs, where conflicting claims have arisen, the A20 leader called the situation childish. He stressed that the ministry does not belong to any individual but to the people, which should serve as an eye-opener regarding how old politics have handled the country’s interests.
Politics should serve the country and its interests, Reyme stated. He mentioned that three names have been circulating in the community as capable candidates to lead this ministry in the lead-up to the elections: current director Nasier Eskak, former minister Maurits Hassankhan, and acting minister Steven Mac Andrew. According to Reyme, the political process should not be complicated but should focus on selecting the right person in the right place, especially given the seriousness of the upcoming elections.
Reyme expressed confidence that the public vote will proceed smoothly, as Suriname has no history of poorly managed elections. Observers have also consistently confirmed this. However, he noted that after the upcoming elections, it is time for the Independent Electoral Office (OKB) to become an autonomous institution responsible for organizing elections.
